A Guide to Sydney’s Top 10 Healthy Cafes

Share

When we think of healthy cafes we think acai bowls, poke bowls and salad bowls. We picture free range, organic eggs, pasture fed proteins and organic fruits and vegetables. But these days, the health-conscious providers of great food are also thinking long-term sustainability and environmental impacts. They acknowledge the important role local farmers and providers play in delivering quality produce. The healthy choices aren’t just on the menus, but in everything from waste reduction to packaging.  It’s great to see and something Green Goodness Co will continue to promote. So, here’s our top choices for cafes that not only promote clean eating food, but a clean way to source and deliver it.

Earth Food Store

Bondi

As Sydney’s longest running organic store, it’s only fitting that we open our list with Earth Food Store. Since 1992, this wholesome delight has been providing Bondi regulars with a variety of salads, soups, tarts, frittatas and risotto balls. Their breakfast menu contains your vegetarian standards; avocado on toast, bircher muesli and banana bread, and some choice delights to try – black sticky rice or the popular green breakfast bowl.  An early dinner option is available Monday – Wednesday where the main dish changes nightly.  Weekends offer a chance to sit back with an organic wine, mezze and cheese plate.

The Hunter Works

Balmain

Reviews for The Hunter Works all have one thing in common.  How great is the coffee!!! And let’s face it, if you’re heading out to a café for breakfast, brunch or lunch, you want the coffee to be good.  Do you know what else is good?  Bagels.  Filled with delicious combinations of classic favourites or new delights.  Using produce sourced from The Cooks Co-Op in the Hawkesbury, what’s available on the menu depends on what’s available from the season.  The Hunter Works makes the list, not just because of its commitment to quality, local produce, but it’s aim for zero waste from its kitchen. When you think about the amount of landfill created by any kitchen, reducing this to a bag a week and using it in the local community garden as compost is great effort.  Family friendly, pet friendly, enviro friendly.  This is definitely a think green, eat clean kinda place.

Earth to Table

Bondi Junction

You’ve heard it time and time again – gluten free, wheat free, dairy free and sugar free doesn’t have to mean taste free. And Earth to Table is absolute proof of this. Its organic, raw, plant-based cuisine at its finest.  Highlights from the menu include shepherds pie – 10 different vegetables with cauliflower mash, sweet potato chips and zucchini gravy and an alfredo pasta with zucchini fettuccini and a creamy cashew based sauce. Their raw cakes and desserts are mouth-watering, guilt free slices of heaven. An abundance of teas, cold-pressed coffees, juices, smoothies and tonics will leave you feeling glorious from the inside out.  Earth to Table recognises that food should be about nourishing your body so you feel energised and empowered. And that’s exactly what they do.

Porch & Parlour

North Bondi

Where to start on the breakfast menu?  The breaky burrito with scrambled egg, brown rice, braised beef and manchego.  Maybe the smash ‘n’ hash with roasted baby potatoes, poached egg, paprika hollandaise and halloumi.  Either way, a side-order of made in house, sprouted gluten free toast has got to be the go.  Porch & Parlour’s wants it food to be clean, balanced, simple, yet progressive.  In the summer months, trading hours are extended into the evenings so you can sit back and relax with one of their biodynamic, organic, natural or sustainable wines.  The food looks amazing, the drinks look mouth-watering and the atmosphere welcoming.  What more can you ask for?

Cali Press

Surry Hills

With five locations throughout Sydney (Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Double Bay and Surry Hills), Cali Press must be doing something right.  Starting out as cold pressed juicers, the team have now extended their range to include smoothies, superfood brekky bowls, sandwiches and coffee.  Continually partnering with local farmers, Cali Press source the finest and freshest seasonal produce to bring their customers the best tasting juices and wholefoods.  In addition to the five outlets, Cali Press also offer 1, 2, 3 and 5-day juice cleanses with delivery available in the metro area.  For those living outside the delivery zone, juices can be collected from any of their stores.  And if you are worried about the amount of packaging used in a 5-day juice cleanse, don’t be.  The bottles are glass, and for each daily set of bottles returned to a Cali Press Juice Bar for recycling, you’ll receive a free juice.  These guys take sustainability seriously and continue to minimise their impact on the environment.

Ouroboros Organic Wholefoods

Surry Hills

Ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a serpent eating it’s own tail – representing the cyclical nature of the universe and continued sustainability.  A fitting symbol for the café that delivers organic, seasonal wholefoods and a great range of organic teas and sparkling drinks, as well as cold pressed juices. Breakfast menu highlights include the corn fritters or dukkah stack.  For lunch, there’s some gutsy organic vegetarian salads with the options to add free-range and pastured proteins.  Or try something from the Mains men – brown rice chicken risotto, or a great looking Burger – roast pumpkin or perhaps haloumi wagyu. Vegetarian and non-vegos will sure to find something to suit their tastebuds.

About Life

Rozelle

About Life has grown from a juice bar and café in Rozelle to a health conscious small empire of seven stores in Sydney (and one in Port Melbourne).  Taking their love of healthy eating one giant step further than most cafes, sisters Jodie Stewart and Tammie Phillips established a wholefoods grocery store to accompany the café and the rest is history.  Nowadays this superstar of conscious choices offers over 10,000 lines of the highest quality natural, sustainable, ethical and locally sourced products.  All stores have a full service offering of grocery, produce, meat, seafood, prepared foods, dairy, bread, health and beauty, self-serve food bar and café.  They truly are a one-stop shop to be experienced.

Three Blue Ducks

Bronte, Rosebery and Byron Bay

With three great locations, Three Blue Ducks take their passion for fresh ingredients seriously, with a kitchen garden on each site and footpath herb gardens for all to share. Organic waste from the kitchen is collected and composted by locals for the community gardens and their takeaway containers are biodegradable. Not only does Three Blue Ducks stand by their ethos of sustainable food and environmental practices, but they cook some delicious meals!  Each location has a different menu, depending on what’s in season and availably locally, so check out their socials to see what’s on offer.

Decisions, decisions.

When heading out, choosing somewhere to eat is often half the battle.  The other half, of course, is choosing what to eat when you get there!  We can’t say that this list is going to make that battle any easier – the choices are all amazing.  Our suggestion would be to work your way through the list and work your way through the menus.  We’re sure you’re going to find a favourite amongst our choices of Sydney’s best healthy café’s
