Sydney’s Top Pilates Studios You Need to Try

Being a keen dancer, I’ve always been drawn to Pilates, as it’s a fantastic way to lengthen and stretch all the major muscle groups in the body; improving flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness. It’s a practise which has been inspired by calisthenics, yoga and ballet.

Fun fact about where Pilates originated from, it was started in the 1920’s by physical trainer Joseph Pilates. He introduced Pilates into America as a way to help injured athletes and dancers safely return to exercise and maintain their fitness. Ever since, Pilates has been adapted to suit people all over and help improve their general fitness!

Sydney is packed full of fantastic Pilates studios, and I’ve collated five of the top studios I would recommend trying.

KX Pilates
Various Locations

This beautiful studio offers a revolutionary, high intensity, fast paced, body-toning workout in a 50 minute slot. The whole principle of this workout is that you’re exercising smarter, not longer, fusing elements of traditional reformer Pilates with cardio and endurance training.

Reformer Pilates is done using the Pilates reformer machine and is generally more intense and more dynamic than mat based Pilates, as it adds resistance to the exercises through the use of the springs which form part of the machine. If you haven’t tried it yet, I’d highly recommend, but be prepared for your muscles to seriously ache initially! Well, as the saying goes -no pain, no gain, right?!

KX studios are located all over Sydney, so they are super accessible for wherever you’re based.

Pilates Physique
Edgecliff

Another great option, which caters to all levels of experience, is Pilates Physique. If you’re starting out, Pilates Physique offers a free trial to first-time clients. This is a great option for those that still weighing up if Pilates is definitely for them, as it means you can get a feel for the workout and studio without feel obligated to necessarily join up.

This studio has a schedule jam packed with a wide variety of classes, including: Matwork, Power Plate, and Cardio. The studio also has a fully supervised creche, so is perfect for the yummy mummies or daddies out there who need to juggle fitness and child-care! Ideal for those based in the Eastern Suburbs, this studio is located in Edgecliff.

Barre Body
Various Locations

Another of my favourites is Barre Body. It offers classes that combine the strength and conditioning of a yoga and Pilates workout, with the flexibility and balance of a ballet class.

What I love about their teaching is that it focuses on mindful movement, delivered by their team of world class teachers. It offers a whole suite of classes that combine the strength and conditioning of a yoga and Pilates workout, with the flexibility and balance of a ballet class. Such as Barre Moves, which incorporates yoga and ballet principles and is great for burning fat and toning; or Barre Tone, a core-focused class incorporating Pilates and barre work with the use of hand weights. The signature Barre Body class is perfect for reshaping and toning, utilising hand weights, mat work and the barre. Studios are located in: Sydney’s CBD, Bondi Junction and Surry Hills.

One Hot Yoga & Pilates
Potts Point

One Hot Yoga, offers memberships for a combination of Pilates and yoga classes, so you can have the best of both worlds! Their studios centre on the two elements that compose the human body: water and air. It’s one of the first in the world to incorporate a hydronic heating system into yoga and Pilates classes, hydrating the eyes and skin as the temperature increases.

Their state-of-the-art air filtration system nourishes the body and cleanses the organs with a constant stream of oxygen, which also ensures the rooms remain feeling fresh with a subtle spiciness from our signature scent. Coupled with raw and recycled building materials, deluxe showers and a custom Ayurvedic hair and body-care range, there’s no denying it is a pretty awesome space to practise in.

One Hot Yoga has many different Pilates class types with flexible starting times, great for those needing it to fit into an already busy schedule.

Peaches Pilates
Maroubra, Bondi, Online

Peaches is a gorgeous boutique fitness studio located in both beachy Bondi and Maroubra. It offers an array of classes which are carefully designed to allow clients to achieve Total Body Toning. Members can treat their bodies to not only Peaches Pilates, but also Yoga, Power (weights circuit), Biggelates (a strength-based power Pilates class set solely to the smooth rhymes of Biggie Smalls – AHHHHMAZING!), HIIP (interval style Pilates class), Plate Fit, Glide Fit and Roll out & Restore - phew.

At Peaches, classes are designed to challenge you both physically and mentally, so it’s the perfect environment to leave worries at the door and enjoy some ‘YOU’ time. All the workouts are programmed to have you sweating, and smiling, whilst learning the core fundamentals of not only building, but maintaining a strong and happy mind, body and soul. This centre welcomes all fitness levels, and is known for specialising in pregnancy and post-natal care, with their Peachy Mums classes, where you can get fit and strong and you can even BYO baby up to seven months!

Peaches are all about personalising their experience for you, by getting to know each student not only by name, but by injury history, number of children, even favourite workout, how cute is that!! This studio very much prides itself on being a community of like-minded people who love to support each other on their journey to health and happiness, and who wouldn’t want a slice of that?
