When it comes to all things health and fitness, nothing seems to be as pure of spirit than the practice of yoga. With its ability to both challenge and rejuvenate your mind and body, devotees will tell you that a toned and flexible physique is just a happy by-product of a much deeper path of self-discovery.

So, where do you start on your Yoga journey?

Firstly, by making sure the studio you attend has qualified instructors. You need to know that you will be in safe hands as you explore the limits of your muscle’s stretching capabilities. Second, make sure the studio you attend is clean and well maintained - especially if they’re offering hot yoga. Those places cause you to get your sweat on! And lastly, by making sure its somewhere you feel a sense of calm and inner well-being. When you walk through the door, the worries of the outside world should be left behind, so you can focus on you, your mat and the challenge to follow.

So, with this in mind, here are our top picks to finding your perfect yoga studio.

Humming Puppy

Redfern

While the name grabs your attention, this studio is so much more than a headline. Using the principles of breath, movement and awareness, there are 4 class styles to suit any level of experience. What sets Humming Puppy apart, and gives this unique studio it’s name, is that the room actually hums. Not an annoying tune that will be stuck in your head for days, but music that has been composed and designed from singing bowls, adjusted to the right frequency to provide grounding during practice and help achieve states of peak performance. All very scientific, but highly enjoyable. Added to this, there is no cramped sardine-feel to the room - it’s capped at 36 participants. And for those that like their own piece of yoga heaven - you can book your actual Manduka mat spot on-line. They’re all provided and laid out so you just show up and enjoy.

InYoga

Surry Hills

With a foundation in vinyasa yoga, InYoga brings together the traditional and the contemporary to create a space for you ‘to live, know and love a life in yoga.’ In addition to the daily classes on offer, InYoga offers a wide range of workshops, training and events. These include nutrition, yoga philosophy, meditation and mindfulness, pranayama, music and seva. InYoga recognises the hectic life we now lead and provides a warm and nurturing space to let go and reconnect with the inner you.

One Hot Yoga

Potts Point

One Hot Yoga opened in Sydney in 2016, but has been in Melbourne since 2012. The team behind One Hot Yoga continue to push the boundaries when it comes to melding traditional practice with modern knowledge and architecture. The state-of-the-art filtration system that heats the studios, but keeps the atmosphere clean and full of moisture is a key feature to One Hot Yoga’s success. The other is the sheer attention to detail when it comes to the natural materials used - linen, leather and timber. All blend together to create a space that is both luxurious and comfortable.

Power Living

Neutral Bay, Bondi, Bondi Junction and Manly

No list of yoga studios would be complete without Power Living. This Australia-wide group continue to grow their community of like-minded yogis with four studios in Sydney. Since 2006, Power Living has been providing vinyasa to its members, encouraging them to embrace the flow. Heated and non-heated classes are available. If you’re after balance, the more gentle yin yoga is recommended.

W1LL Yoga

Surry Hills

This is not the quiet, deeply contemplative yoga of yesterday. This is today’s yoga, designed for today’s people. There’s no hard to decipher pose names - just easy to understand and simple to follow routines. There’s no listening to the person next to you inhaling or exhaling - just the rhythm of the music to inspire you. With a range of classes to suit every music lover, W1LL is yoga for the 21st century - respectful of the past, but doing it their own way.
