10 Ways to Practice Self-Care

10 Ways to Practice Self-Care

“Self-care means giving the world the best of you, instead of what is left of you.”

WANDER OFTEN

If you find yourself procrastinating on Pinterest in search of idealistic travel hot spots, it might be time to take a walk. The most wonderful things can be discovered when you pay attention with all of your senses. If you’re uninspired by your neighbourhood, take a drive some place closer to nature, where you can experience the true benefits a change of scenery brings. The best part? You don’t need to book, just head out and explore.

SOOTHE YOUR SOUL

Do the things you’ve been putting off because you got busy doing all the ‘shoulds’ and ‘musts’ in your life. Try a cooking class, eat dessert, dip your toes in the ocean. “Whatever’s good for your soul, do that!!”

DISCOVER YOU

It’s loud in the crowd, and among so many external influences, it may be difficult to figure out what you really need. While outside influences can sometimes be a source of inspiration, try tuning out of the noise for a while, and let yourself be drawn naturally to things that matter to you. Seeking clarity in your values helps to navigate life’s challenges.

DRINK WATER

Listening to yourself is also a key component in recognising signs of thirst. When deprived of water, the body needs to work harder to produce energy, which can affect concentration, memory and mood. It’s no secret that life gets busy, so staying hydrated may be the last thing on your mind. Try a warm cup of water with lemon, or a sparkling spritz of cool water with cucumber and mint to liven things up a little. With our bodies being made up of around 65% water, maintaining functions like breathing and digestion, it pays to stay hydrated!

BREATHE

Although breathing is such an automated function, it can be so easily overlooked. During times of stress, breathing may become dysfunctional and the most effective way to reconnect with your body is via your lungs. Conscious breathing fosters a mind body connection, which allows you to restore important cells, and release muscle tension.

STAND TALL

Posture not only plays a role in effective breathing, standing tall can be considered a metaphorical way of truly valuing yourself. Think about how much joy a sunflower brings, just reach for the sun and allow yourself to grow. Be the best version of you.

HAVE COMPASSION

A true antidote to stress, compassion allows you to practice forgiveness, develop empathy and fully accept yourself and others. It is described by experts as “the calm in the storm”. So next time you feel grey clouds eclipsing your inner sunshine, tune into this innate ability, and gain a deeper, more helpful perspective.

MAKE TIME TO REFLECT

Writing can help reframe your thoughts by allowing you to reflect; another way of gaining perspective by stepping back. With a fresh outlook you’ll find greater understanding, which may allow you to approach a situation differently next time, or release pockets of worry in your mind. Just let it flow so you can let it go!

REACH OUT

It’s not always easy but reaching out is right up there with eating your greens! According to research, a sense of connection is one of our most fundamental human needs. Finding your mojo may mean starting small, and that’s ok. You don’t need to jump out of an aeroplane to get out of your comfort zone; allowing yourself to feel vulnerable may seem scary enough! Embrace it and experience the benefits of connection and joy.

LAUGH & SLEEP

“The shortest distance between two people is laughter”. Not only is laughter a great way to connect with others, it’s like a superfood when it comes to your health. Seek out sources of humour when you need a boost; movies, comics, comedies. Perhaps give laughter yoga a try!? Enjoy the soothing benefits of a good chuckle, you’ll sleep better as a result. Of course, it can’t hurt to top up your sleep tank with a cheeky afternoon nap this weekend. Spanish slumber experts say a siesta can reduce stress, help cardiovascular functions, and improve alertness and memory.

“Put yourself at the top of your to do list every day and the rest will fall into place”
