First up, briefly tell us a bit about yourself and what you do!

Hey, I’m Carla Thomas and I’m a Perth-based holistic health and business coach and specialist in mind-body medicine. My message is all about nourishing ourselves from the inside out and just how easy it is to get on top of your health through wholefoods and clean living. Motivated by my own story of combating depression, anxiety, poor kidney function, and the on-set of rheumatoid arthritis through nutrition and practices of self-care, I released my first book The Juicy Movement: A Holistic Approach to Clean Living last year which shares all the rituals, practices and beautifully presented recipes that I live by, and have taught to thousands of happy clients around Australia. Right now, I’m working on a recently launched passion project with my beloved Comms Manager Kami Ramini called Holistic Business Co. This is where I get to pay it forward with my knowledge around building a holistic business and show others how they can create or build on their existing holistic businesses. What time do you wake up most days and how many hours of sleep do you aim for?

During the warmer months, I find I’m up with the sun between 5-5.30am but at the moment and since returning from holiday, it’s more between 6-6.30am. I’m a huge advocate for getting enough sleep and I aim for 7-8 hours a night to run at my best.

What’s your morning routine to set you up for a great day?

An average week day morning starts with 500-600mls of water with freshly squeezed lemon and my wholefood supplements, which I take daily and have done for nearly nine years and counting! I aim to get moving for 20 minutes via some stretching/yoga in my living room whilst oil pulling. On another morning, I may head straight out for a walk with the dog. I then take some time for gratitude and priming before getting stuck into some email/social replies while sipping on a cup of Fully Charged Coffee (a recipe from my book). I like to get started when the world is generally still sleeping. It’s peaceful and less chance of interruptions! If I haven’t gone for a walk then I head to the gym followed by a late morning brekky which is usually a smoothie or smoothie bowl. Then I’m raring to go!

Describe a typical day of eating for you.

I don’t believe in a “one size fits all approach” and for me two main meals and maybe a snack works best. In general, I have breakfast around 9.30/10am over 30-45 minutes and it’s likely to be a green smoothie or berry (acai style) smoothie topped up with some toasted nuts or gluten free granola with a cup of green tea. If I feel the need to snack later on, it will likely be some nuts or slices of apple with tahini and a cup of tea. Dinner is around 6pm and also 80% plant based. I’m not vegetarian but tend to naturally eat more vegetarian meals and when I do feel like animal protein it’s more likely eggs or fish and then chicken and red meat only every so often. It’s always something different! I don’t have a huge sweet tooth but when I feel like something after dinner, then I love my kefir with berries or goji berries and 1-2 squares of dark choc with a cup of herbal tea .

Tell us about your daily beauty routine! What are your non-negotiables for looking and feeling your best?.

I’m all about keeping it simple and focusing more on lifestyle factors vs expensive beauty ‘fix it’ products. I dry brush once a day using my Pure Home Body ‘Eco Max Jute Face Brush’ (works fine on the body too!) before my evening shower to encourage circulation and lymphatic movement. And I use a loofah or my Enjo Body Glove with body wash in the shower. I use a basic shop-bought facial cleanser, moisturiser, eyecream and rosehip oil (which I mix in with the moisturiser) that are free from all the main destructive toxins. I’m HUGE on keeping my skin from going dry, so always moisturise with a body lotion post shower and mix in coconut oil – I’m obsessed with coconut oil for the body, face, lips etc. I like to make my own toner, exfoliants and face masks which I share in my ebook ‘Beauty-full Inside and Out’, which is just one of the free ebooks available to clients on my wellness program, The Juicy Life Program. Oh and I’m a fan of brushing my teeth with charcoal twice a week using Moon Dust Coconut Charcoal. Ultimately adequate hydrating, exercise and sweat, plus daily nutrient loading and sleep is what gives you the best chance to glow in my opinion.

Do you take any supplements, vitamins or special wellness elixirs? If so, we’d love to know!

YES! For almost 9 years now I have been taking Juice Plus+ wholefood supplements every day and they are a complete non-negotiable! For me it means no matter what else happens in my day, I’ve loaded up on the nutrients from close to 30 different fruit, veg and berries – because that’s what they are. They’re not multivitamins but the whole fruit and veg in concentrated powder form. It ensures that I bridge any gap from what I get on my plate and definitely contributes to the level of energy and immunity I have each and every day. I also use their vegan Complete macro sachets in my smoothies (and other snacks) and their vegan omega capsules over the winter (when I feel my joints need some extra omega loving). Apart from that, I may use other ‘superfoods’ such as maca powder in my smoothies but otherwise I get all my extra antiinflammatories, antioxidants and super powers from my food choices. Oh, I do get my wonderful naturopath Kat Blake from Invigorate Naturopathy to mix up a night time herbal to help me relax and unwind, especially for those days I may be feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Do you have an evening wind-down ritual?

Yep! As I said before my kefir, berries and choc with a calming herbal tea (peppermint, chamomile, lemon + ginger etc) and then I take my time doing my night time beauty routine (much to hubby’s dismay!). Once in bed, the phone is on aeroplane mode (ok, I may scroll enews first but it’s a habit I’m trying to break as it leads to further scrolling!). I take some breaths inhaling my Doterra lavender blend, read some affirmations picked randomly from a couple of books on my bedside table and then get stuck into whatever book/books I’m reading. If hubby hasn’t fallen asleep yet, we share three things we are grateful about for that day.

What are your top 3 wellness non-negotiables:

1. Self care/me time
2. Exercise
3. Nutrition to fuel my mind and body
4. Connection with loved ones (had to throw a fourth in there sorry!)

Your absolute favourite healthy cafe in Perth is?

Oh, this is hard! Well, there are so many but being a Perth local I’ll go with the one I spend the most time in which is Health Freak Cafe in Applecross. Our friends owned it up until recently and I actually held my book launch there. They make my favourite acai bowls and also happily throw in a sachet of my JP+ Complete I always pre pack with me lol.

Favourite farmers market or healthy place to shop?

I’ve been a southie for close to 10 years and I just adore the weekend vibe at the Fremantle Markets. When I can I try to get down with hubby on a Sunday and we’ll grab a coffee and then hit up Guru Wholefoods for some fridge and pantry top ups.

What’s your fitness routine & favourite way to get sweaty and where’s your go-to?

I have a few things I like to do and keep on rotation so that I don’t get bored or my body doesn’t get complacent. Three times a week, I run at the gym (I’m a member at Good Life Myaree), I hit up a Power Vinyasa class at Power Living Myaree three times a week (I especially cherish my Sunday morning classes), I do CxWorx once a week at the gym, Pilates with Elise at Movement Society every fortnight and I also try to get to a Jungle Body with Bec every two weeks or when time allows. Being an ex-dancer, it is such a fun way to honour that side of me and do it with ex-dancer girlfriends of mine! Saturdays are all about resting and just enjoying a morning walk by the river with my dog. I usually take him out for 20-30 minutes most days anyway but he knows Saturday mornings are for the ‘big walk’.

If you could only wear one brand of activewear for the rest of your life it would be…

Too easy, Fearless Activewear! I fell in-love with range last year and the message behind it and am super proud to be their in-house wellness expert.

What’s the one beauty or wellness treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?

Hmm…I’m pretty low key in this department! I love a good monthly mani and pedi at my local nail shop Modern Nails in Bicton. I also treat myself to a Thai Massage at the start of each month to reward myself for the past working month. I hit up a couple of little spots in Fremantle. Either Sawadee or Kinnaree take me back to Phuket! Otherwise, I look forward to my Sunday coconut oil + sugar body scrub I make myself. Oh and I LOVE a good Friday evening bath to switch me from work to weekend mode. Candles, acoustic tunes, red wine, a good book or magazine…that’s my jam!

What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t got around to yet?

Two things I have done but am terrible at making time to get back in for are the Infrared Sauna at Kardia Skin & Body and also the Float Tanks. I did it once at Beyond Rest and fell asleep within 10 minutes. Amazing!

Are you into any woo-woo wellness trends?

Haha, well I guess it depends on perspective as some people could think what I do is ‘woo-woo’. I’m not into anything too out there but I have an open mind to everything and anything. I guess one of my specialties of mind-body medicine is flower essences so I suppose that’s my most woo woo trait or practice.

If you could have the ultimate day of wellness & happiness in [city] what would it involve and where would you go?

I’m going to use this question to reflect on my recent travels in Europe. My ultimate day is waking up to the sun in a gorgeous hotel by the sea such as Dubrovnik or the Greek Islands (I also love Bali and Phuket). Practicing my morning ritual of stretching on the balcony followed by some gratitude looking out over the ocean. Then getting in a workout followed by a healthy brekky spread (fruit, nuts, yoghurt and also some eggs with smoked salmon, mushrooms, tomato and avocado). The rest of the day would involve some reading by the pool or ocean in between swims, exploring part of the city and couple of hours of work inspired by our room views. Night’s are always about the food! Finding a local place (fancy or super casual) with great food and wine and walks back to our hotel with gelato in hand…Ok now I may start planning my next holiday! Basically you can plonk me anywhere there is sun, heat and ocean!

What’s your dream wellness vacay?

See above. Othwerwise, for an actual retreat style get away, I’ve had a place called Kamalaya on my bucket list for about eight years. It’s a Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa Resort situated in Koh Samui…and one of these days I’ll get myself there!

And lastly… do you have any top secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?

Wake up every day and choose to live in your top values. When you do that, the rest takes care of itself.
