We want to have our cake and eat it too, so we know the macro breakdown of our favourite raw mars bar slice. And just like it’s sugar laden namesake, we know the value of being able to work, rest and play. So, when it comes to looking at Sydney’s best fitness venues, activities and workouts, we adopted a holistic approach to see where it’s at for the Body, Mind and Spirit to workout.

Body - Studio Training

Flow Athletic

Paddington

If you’re looking for a training studio that offers a balanced and complete workout experience, then Flow Athletic is a great place to start. The Flow Philosophy is 1:1:1 or 1 strength session, 1 cardio session, 1 yoga session. There’s a multitude of classes to embrace the philosophy including kettlebell/dumbbell combos, spin or boxing and vinyasa/yin classes. Don’t have time to separate your sessions? Not to worry. Try their most popular class - Bike/Asana. On your bike for 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes on the mat. How sweet it is.

P.E. Dept

Potts Point

The last of our triple threat gyms, P.E. Dept has three departments to its bustling, 2-studio business:

  • Functional Department - it’s cardio time
  • Strength Department - it’s lifting time
  • Yoga Department - it’s recovery time

With a great mix of classes and an arsenal of equipment to keep everyone happy, P.E. Dept has the added advantage of the Wholefoods Dept Cafe, adjacent.

Crew

Sydney CBD

Looking to try something a little different in a cardio class? One that works 86% of your muscle mass, with minimal impact on your body? You have to join the Crew! This is a full body circuit class with a twist. High Intensity Interval Training on a WaterRower is paired with dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine balls and other equipment, to burn calories, tone and sculpt. Never rowed before? All’s good, there’s a Crew 101 class that’ll teach you everything you need to know. Need some competition to keep you motivated? Try Regatta. Compete on time, distance or calorie-based goals in this team-orientated workout.

Mind - Ninja Warrior Training

Following the success of Ninja Warrior Australia, it’s no surprise that obstacle training is experiencing an upswing in popularity. Anyone who’s competed in an event whether it be Miss Muddy or Tough Mudder, will tell you that the mind gives way long before the body. So, listed below are some of Sydney’s top places to prepare you for your next obstacle challenge.

Obstacle Course Race School

Tuggerah

Located on the Central Coast, OCR has over 30 obstacles to practice and perfect, before your next race. With obstacles specific to Spartan and Raw Challenge, the course is available even if you’re not racing, so you can build upper and lower body strength. The gym offers bootcamp, circuit and PT sessions for adults and kids.

Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training

Bringelly

With 18 obstacles in place, a dedicated ninja space and a growing reputation, BOOTS as it is affectionately known, has got you covered for all major obstacle events. Run by husband and wife team Wayne and Lorelai Boots, both personal trainers with a dislike for indoor studios, their aim is to turn fitness into fun. The facility offers obstacle training sessions for adults and children as well as personal training and bootcamp sessions. The facilities are also available for birthday parties.

Movement Republic

Pyrmont

Remember the fun you had in the playground at school, swinging on the monkey bars, or running barefoot while you played tip, tig or tag (depending on which state you went to school)? All these activities involved natural movement and more importantly, you having fun with friends. This is the philosophy behind Movement Republic where there is no isolated people and no isolated movements. Described as a playground for adults disillusioned with your typical gym set up, Movement Republic use their Movement Mentors to deliver uniquely designed workshops, to build strength, stamina, stability and community.

Spirit - Yoga With A View

You can’t discuss the fitness connection of mind, body and spirit without mentioning yoga. We’ve already covered Sydney’s top yoga studios here, but this amazing city has other spaces in which to embrace your inner yogi.

PARKYoga

If you’ve ever thought that the Calyx in the Royal Botanic Gardens was a great place for yoga, then you would be correct. How about the Domain or Centennial Park? Yep. Correct again. Svenja Dahm runs an early morning program from these stunning locations, allowing you to start your day with one of the best views in the world.

Yoga From the Sky

Picture yourself performing a perfect sun salutation as the sun rises. Now imagine you are 250m above the city looking down at the harbour. This can be your new Wednesday morning ritual as you make your way to Sydney’s Tower Eye Observation Deck for Yoga From the Sky. With 360 views, this 45-minute class will certainly have you practicing gratitude for the abundance of beauty this city has to offer. Numbers are strictly limited to 35 people per session and you must be 16 years or over to attend.

Yoga by the Sea

What’s more quintessential Sydney then yoga on the beach at Bondi. Or Bronte. Or Manly. These are just a few of the locations available to outdoor yoga enthusiasts’ courtesy of Yoga by the Sea. Take your pick of restorative Hatha yoga for pain relief, stress management and balance, or Power Vinyasa to work up a sweat for strength, toning and fitness. Either way, immerse yourself and your senses as you enjoy the ocean views with a touch of dolphin spotting.

So, there you have it

Some old favourites with a new twist. Some new twists that will soon become old favourites. Fitness should always be about fun and getting out and enjoying yourself. If you’re looking to start a new health path or looking to change your current course, why not give one of these a go.
