What to Eat For Ultra Glowing Skin

Now that it is officially spring and summer is in sight, many of us are turning our attention to skin health and how to promote a summer glow. Thankfully, we only need to turn as far as looking closer at our diet and making sure we are consuming the right kinds of foods. With that being said, here are the top 5 foods to eat to make your skin glow!

Turmeric

Turmeric is deemed the ultimate superfood and for good reason, especially when it comes to skin health! Turmeric contains the active compound curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agent, which plays an important role in collagen formation, wound healing and inhibiting advanced glycation end (AGEs) products. All of which contribute to glowing skin! To get the most benefit from turmeric, make sure to eat it alongside a source of healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil and pinch of black pepper.

Avocado

Avocado is a fantastic source of monounsaturated fats, a healthy type of fat. In order to absorb fat-soluble antioxidants from the foods we eat, we require adequate fat in our diet and to eat such foods with fat. This means, adding avocado to meals can help with this process. From a skin perspective, healthy fats help to nourish the skin and keep skin supple. In addition, helping the body absorb and utilise antioxidants within our food, assists in increasing the strength of connections between collagen fibres and inhibiting the formation of AGEs and therefore preventing associated skin damage.

Salmon

Salmon is well known for its omega-3 essential fatty acid content. The body cannot make its own supply of omega-3, so it’s important to include enough omega-3 rich foods in our diet. A diet rich in omega-3 is believed to dampen down damage caused to the skins extracellular matrix including sun exposure, ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. If you don’t like salmon or are plant-based, try hemp seeds instead.

Berries

While many of us don’t need another reason to eat berries, they must be mentioned when talking about skin health! Berries are a very rich source of phytochemicals, including anthocyanidins. Phytochemicals inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end (AGEs) products. AGEs contribute towards reduced skin elasticity, skin inflammation and skin yellowing. As an added bonus, blueberries also contain vitamin C. Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen production and also offers antioxidant properties protecting the skin from free radical damage.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a commonly cited source of zinc, which many of us are deficient in, partly due to the quality of the soil our produce is grown in. Zinc plays a number of roles when it comes to skin health. Specifically, zinc helps protect cell membrane integrity, speeds up wound healing and possibly improves skin texture and appearance. Pumpkin seeds also offer protein (amino acids), which are also required alongside zinc for collagen production and healthy connective tissue formation.
