The Best Organic and Bulk Food Stores in Brisbane FoodBy Tessa BeecheyDecember 7, 2021 Share Supporting local farmers and suppliers of sustainable foods is what we’re all about at Green Goodness Co, and sometimes the best of these stores can be hard to find. Come with us for a shop around Brisbane’s favourite organic, sustainable health and bulk foods stores. Bring your own shopping bags! The Source Bulk Foods Bulimba The Source Bulk Foods has been gaining notoriety and impact with its philosophy of waste free shopping and using wholesome ingredients. All stores are plastic bag free and encourage you to bring any container or jar you please to fill up as little or as much as you like! But don’t worry if you forget – they do offer paper bags, handy since you’ll always want to leave with more than what was on your original shopping list! These stores are great for finding the hard-to-find ingredients too, and you know you’ll be supporting a grassroots Australian business which supports charities and works hard to minimise its environmental footprint. The Source Bulk Foods is now the largest bulk foods retailer in Australia, with stores right across Australia. Jump online and check out your closest Source. The Green Edge Windsor As a proudly independent family business, the years of work at The Green Edge has paid off. This grocer-cum-café has kept with the times and is soon launching into online shopping and delivery too, so watch this space! Instore, Green Edge maintains its quaint, European delicatessen feel and an impressive range of organic and vegan groceries. Open for breakfast, lunch and for a cosy dinner out, The Green Edge kitchen is on Friday and Saturday nights. With vegetarian and gluten-free options and house made features throughout its menu, The Green Edge really does have the edge on scrumptious and affordable provender to eat in or take home for your own gourmet creations. Rock ‘n’ Roll Marketplace Greenslopes This is your go-to for fresh, locally sourced organic produce south of the ol’ river as well as a funky hangout and tribute to the 1950s. There’s an in-house butcher for the meat lovers and a sweet bakery too. If you like to cook with the odd Asian root vegetable, fresh herbs or specialty mushrooms, Rock ‘n’ Roll are good at stocking fresh produce that is harder to find. Open seven days from 6am. Wray Organic Newmarket Wray is a beautiful and compact, no-nonsense health food store and café, situated in the heart of Newmarket on Enoggera Road. It’s clear a lot of love goes into the lunches served, and they’re packed with goodness. The friendly staff are very approachable and the range of delicious wholefoods sold by weight (including organic Himalayan sea salt and all your favourite pulses) are competitively priced. There’s also a decent selection of organic wine for sale (very reasonably priced at around $20), making Wray a convenient, all-in-one stop for dinner. Wray has ten other stores scattered around the metro area and beyond, including Ipswich and Toowoomba, and is open seven days. Fundies Wholefood Market Paddington Originating in 1970s Lismore, and also operating in Byron Bay, Fundies (short for Fundamental Food Stores) brings a piece of the magical northern coast to Brisbane with its iconic Paddington store and café. Fundies’ naturopaths provide advice free of charge and form part of the highly motivated staff who are always ready to answer queries. Besides being a mecca for all things gluten-free, Fundies Paddington offers scrumptious dishes in the beautiful heritage building’s informal café. The first Tuesday of each month is Friends Day. Do your shopping on this day and Friends of Fundies cardholders will receive 15% off most retail prices! Open seven days. Flannery’s Chermside Situated on the busy corner of Rode and Webster Roads, Flannery’s Chermside is your go-to organic grocery store. It sells everything from wholefoods, to fresh bread and eggs, to organic hair dye and household cleaners. It’s a one-stop shop for all your health food favourites and given the large product range, even the more elusive items which don’t frequent your corner store. There’s a café nook in-store serving freshly ground organic espresso and the staff are eager to please. Check out the website pre-shop for loads of deliciously healthy recipes. Organic and Quality Foods Hillcrest Now for those of you who are hooked on deliveries (guilty!) here’s an alternative to the big supermarkets. Organic and Quality Foods is actually Queensland’s oldest organic retailer still under original ownership, and makes regular deliveries all over Brisbane, Ispwich and the Gold Coast, as well as to Rockhampton, Longreach, Bundaberg and surrounding areas. This family business was established in 1987 and has been supplying organic fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products ever since. Insider’s tip: Head down to OQF headquarters in Hillcrest when it opens to the public 1pm – 4pm Thursdays (apart from weeks affected by public holidays). This is your chance to pick up a bargain with big discounts across all stock to make way for fresh new produce each week. Get in touch with us and let us know what you think of these organic and bulk foods stores. If you’ve found another supplier of fresh and sustainable foods, don’t keep it to yourself!
